The comprehensive $1.9 trillion relief package championed by Democrats will bring Maryland a giant step closer to successfully fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and building our country back better. “The signing of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan is a huge victory for Maryland and for all Americans. The broad and bold relief package completed the $2000 direct relief checks for Americans, funded $160 billion in vaccination and testing expansion, and provided billions of dollars in aid to local governments and small businesses; including significant capital investments for minority-owned businesses and small businesses in economically-disadvantaged areas” said Dr. Crystal R. Francis, Chair. “Our nation is at a critical inflection point and help is on the way. Tens of millions of Americans are out of work; Maryland families are struggling to pay for household expenses and need help putting food on the table; and small businesses across the state are on the brink of closing their doors. While Republicans refused to deliver much-needed aid to Americans and Marylanders in need, Democrats delivered on their promise to enhance their progress fighting the pandemic, and to build our country by putting resources back into the hands of businesses and families. “The Baltimore County Democratic Party is proud to stand with President Biden, Vice President Harris, Senators Cardin and Van Hollen, Democratic House Members, and Democratic Party supporters who made this massive relief package possible.” Other notable aspects of the American Rescue Plan include:

H.R. 1, the For the People Act, would fundamentally improve the way our politicians are held accountable, making elections more fair, transparent, and accessible. “As we watch Republicans across the nation attempt to roll back voting rights and restrict access to the ballot box, this critical piece of legislation would protect the most fundamental right of any democracy — the right to vote. Every American who can vote should be able to do so with ease and without undue barriers. “The For the People Act would also bring significant transparency and anti-corruption measures to our government, including limiting the use of ‘dark money’ — ensuring that SuperPACs cannot influence our elections without accountability. The American people deserve to know what their Members of Congress are doing, and be guaranteed our elected officials are working for the people, not special interests. “This push to increase government transparency and protect voting rights is supported by the vast majority of Americans and Marylanders, including most Republicans. These are bipartisan issues, and it’s unfortunate that Congressional Republicans were unable to rise to the moment and support bipartisan solutions. “We thank Congressman Sarbanes, Majority Leader Hoyer, and all of Maryland’s Democratic House Members for their hard work on this bill. We look forward to it being heard in the Senate, and hope that Senators can set aside their differences to pass this crucial piece of broadly supported legislation.” Baltimore County Democratic State Central committee member mark brewster joins team ruppersberger3/3/2021
