BALTIMORE COUNTY DEMOCRATIC STATE CENTRAL COMMITTEE SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR OPENINGS IN LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS 6 AND 7A

The BALTIMORE COUNTY DEMOCRATIC STATE CENTRAL COMMITTEE (BCDSCC), known as the Baltimore County Democratic Party, was elected on July 19, 2022 during the Democratic Primary Election. Starting with the 2022 Primary Election, the Maryland Democratic Party Bylaws now require that County districts elect an even number of members who are gender balanced, when possible, at the time of the Primary Election.

Central Committee Member vacancies existed following the Primary Election because an insufficient number of district candidates filed to run for Central Committee in specific gender categories. On October 20, 2022, the Central Committee issued a Notice soliciting applications to fill vacancies in Districts 6, 7A, 42A, 42B, 43B, and 44A. As no applications for Districts 7A, 42A, 42B, and 43B had been received by the October 20th Notice's deadline, the Central Committee issued on November 16th a second Notice for applications for the Districts 7A, 42A, 42B, and 43B vacancies, with an application deadline of December 1, 2022. The application period to fill the vacancies in those districts remains open.

This Notice concerns two other vacancies:  one in District 6 (female) and a second and new vacancy in District 7A (female). The District 6 vacancy was first identified in the Central Committee's October 20th Notice regarding vacancies and applications are now again being received for one vacancy in District 6. The second and new District 7A vacancy arises from a Member's resignation on November 18th.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen, a registered Democratic voter and a resident of the Baltimore County district for which they are applying. Interested individuals should submit: 1) a complete application, 2) a professional resume, and 3) a letter of interest indicating their professional, civic and political experience and why they are interested in serving on the BCDSCC.

Eligible applicants are invited to submit applications in those districts and gender categories. Non-binary applicants are also eligible to apply. In each case, the existing District Member(s) are charged with interviewing candidates and making a recommendation to the full Committee regarding the District's new proposed Member.

Materials should be e-mailed to info@baltimorecountydems.com with the relevant subject line, e.g.,  “District 6 Vacancy Application," and "District 7A Vacancy Application," on or before Wednesday, December 7, 2022. Applications may also be mailed via USPS to BCDSCC, Attention: Nominations Subcommittee, P.O. Box 19092, Towson, MD 21286 and be received no later than the deadline, which is 11:59 PM on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.  Application packages that are submitted after the deadline or are missing any of the required materials will not be considered.

Applicants will be contacted to schedule the date, time and location of their interview. All eligible applicants will be interviewed publicly via either a virtual platform (Zoom Meeting) that will be live streamed or in person. It is anticipated that all interviews and the related District decisions will take place between December 8th and December 13th so that the relevant District's recommended candidate may be considered by the full Central Committee membership at the next General Membership meeting (December 13th, 7:00 pm).

What is the Democratic State Central Committee?

The Central Committee is the grass roots backbone of the Maryland Democratic Party. Composed of activists and community leaders, it provides a core of enthusiastic workers and organizers. The Central Committee is constituted under Maryland’s Election Law to govern the Democratic Party. Each county and Baltimore City has its own central committee to manage party affairs in its jurisdiction. Central Committee members are elected at primary elections every four years. Any registered Democrat can run for a seat on his or her county’s central committee. To advance the party’s principles and help elect Democrats to public office, committee members register and assist voters, staff events, work at polls and phone banks, raise funds and resources, and support the party organization. In addition, the committee recommends appointments to the governor for the Baltimore County Board of Elections and helps to fill vacancies in certain elected offices.
